Hello,
Each time I run Kali Linux VMware shows the attached error message. Technical support did not help because this Linux distribution is not supported by them. I do not have issues with any other VMs. After hours of research the only workaround I figured out was to fully uninstall and reinstall VMware which takes me an hour and is only functional until I shut down the machine because the next time I run it I get the same error again.
Here is a list of workarounds that did not work so I will not try them again:
- Running VMware in admin mode (anyway my user is admin)
- Deleting the VM and reinstall it back
- Running the repair function in VMware
- Running a windows files integrity check
- Running a hard drive check and defrag to repair bad sectors
- Downgrading VMware to a prior version (from 16.2.3 to 16.1)
- Increasing memory allocation to the VM (doubling and tripling)
- Asking the technical support team, they said the logs looked normal
- Any other workaround found in YouTube about error (Vcpu0)
- Add Kali vm folder to antivirus exceptions
I will appreciate any help from anyone in this community.
thanks.
Hello,
I am closing this thread since it appears I found a solution to the problem and the VM has started correctly for several days straight. What I did was to change the configuration of the following two executable files to make mandatory their execution as administrator.
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64\vmware-vmx.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmware.exe
Kali VMs often die because they contain binaries that trigger Antivirus-tools.
Dont blame Kali for this - the false detections are the fault of your over-eager Antirus tools.
Anyway - whoever needs to deal with corrupt Kali VMs - make sure your Antivirus-tools do NOT scan the Kali VMDK-files.
They will contain stufff that looks like malware to overeager scanning- tools - but thats exactly what Kali is good for.
So be prepared for setting exceptions if you want to run Antivirus-tools side by side with a Kali VM.

Thank you Ulli,
I will give it a try to put exceptions in my antivirus.
cheers.
Hi,
In addition to what Ulli said, make sure your VM is not stored in a location that OneDrive is syncing as OneDrive will help you by corrupting your VMs.

Unfortunately adding exceptions did not work either. thank you.
Hi Immortal,
My VMs folders is outside any cloud storage service such as one drive. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
