VMware Workstation reboots VM after login!!

Good day,

I'm running VMWare workstation  9.0.0 build-812388 with a guest (Windows server 2003 x86).

It was working fine for months, I don't remember doing anything special, but now when i boot up the VM & right after I login, VMware automatically reboots the virtual machine.

Host spec.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

System model: Dell - inspiron N5110

Processor: i7-2670QM 2.20 GHz (8 CPUs)

Guest spec.

OS: Windows server 2003 En x86

1 processor with 1 core

Memory : 1.5 GB

HDD capacity: 30 GB

Thanks for your help in advance.

I don't want to rule anything out, but I doubt it's Workstation which reboots the guest!? Is it a clean reboot or a hard reset you see? Is the Windows 2003 activated? What's logged in the VM's vmware.log file during the reboot?

it's a hard/instant reboot, i login then see the VMware boot screen. I cleared the logs & retried to see the log, the only thing that was captured is below:

windows 2003 is activated.

What I was thinking of was the vmware.log file located in the VM's folder on the datastore. This may contain the reason or at least hints for the reboot.

I'm not sure whether this helps, but maybe worth a try:

  • disable Autoconnect for Floppy and CD-ROM drive
  • disable 3D Acceleration
  • ensure VMware Tools Autoupdate is disabled (in the VM's Options tab)

The problem is resolved, the issue was with an external portable drive reconnected from the host to the guest when the guest powers on.

sorry for wasting your time :smileyblush: & thanks for your help.
