VMware Workstation fails, asks for gcc 9.3.0

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

VMware Workstation fails, asks for gcc 9.3.0 although gcc-9.3.0 is installed.

The VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up asking for location of GCC.

I'm clueless.

This is for VMware WOrkstation 9 (which I have licensed) but the same error message occurs also when I start

vmplayer (possibly a preinstalled one?) VMware Player 5.0.4 build-1945795) under Ubuntu.

Also, when I try to install VMplayer-16 bundle it says it cannot be installed with VMware-Workstation present (?! why that?)

You can only have one version installed on your host at a time.  They use the same underlying system files, so can't both exist together.

Workstation 9 is an antique, and certainly not officially Supported on a new OS like Ubuntu 20.x.  May be time to upgrade your Workstation license, or dedicate an older computer running an older OS to host that version.
