VMware Workstation 6.5 Fails to Start after Host Kernel Upgrade

VMware Version: VMware-Workstation-6.5.3-185404.x86_64

Host: CentOS 5.3, kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 03:28:30 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The last two kernel upgrades have resulted in VMware refusing to start. The previous kernel to this one was 2.6.18-128.7.1.

The only way I have been able to get around this is to remove and reinstall VMware from the RPM. Even then it requires several iterations of starting/stopping VMware to get it working again. This apparently started with the WS 6.5.3 upgrade.

Why is this happening? What can I do about it?
