VMware Workstation 6.0.0 importing sv2i files

Hello,

I was used to running virtual machines by making an image of a disk using BESR 6.5 (Symantec Backup Exec System Restore) and then just simply open the sv2i file created by BESR on either VMware Workstation 6.0.0 or the VMware Player 2.0.0 and everything worked fine. I did not have to convert the files from sv2i to vmdk as VMware would take care of everything. It was close to perfect.

Then I realized Symantec had released a new version of BESR (v7.0.1), with some new and improved functions, such as the ability to convert sv2i to vmdk. I then proceeded with buying BESR 7.0.1.

I installed the program, did an image of the hard disk as usual, went to load the sv2i file onto VMware Player 2.0.0 and I get a message saying "An error occured during conversion". If I try the loading it on VMware Workstation 6.0.0 just to be sure, and I get the same error.

I contacted Symantec about this, and all direct import should work on VMware 6.0.0 and if not, I should contact VMware.

I also tried converting with BESR 7.0.1 the sv2i files to vmdk files. I had no problems with the conversion, though when I create a new Virtual Machine as Workstation 6.x and add the 2 recently created vmdk files as disks, it tells me

"Add this older version of virtual disk in this virtual machine?

The chosen virtual disk was created by an older version of VMware product. Workstation 6.x will be able to use this virtual disk without converting the disk version."

The same happens if I try to use Workstation 5.x. However, if I use Workstation 4.x it does not display that message.

Again Symantec asked me to contact VMware.

So can anyone tell me why should VMware Workstation not import sv2i files created by BESR 7.0.1 but would import the ones created by BESR 6.5 and if there's a way to fix this, how to do it?

Also, in case any of you has some information about how, if possible, to fix the problem of the mismatching versions of files converted by BESR 7.0.1 and imported to VMware Workstation 6.0.0 I would appreciate it.

Am really wondering if I'm the only person experiencing problems like this.

Does anyone have a clue on how to do what I'm trying to do?

I am using the trial of VMware Workstation 6.0.0 at the moment, though I would like to buy it if this method proves easier than other methods I previously tried.

Still so far I'm getting nowhere :S

You are trying to use an image from BESR7 that is not supported in WS 6.0 or Player 2.0

You can use instructions from Symantec to update the V2iDiskLib to read this newer format.

Heya,

Sorry it took me a while to reply, only had a chance to try this today.

Well, I followed all the steps in that page that was sent, restarted the computer a couple of times and now this is the error message I get:

EDIT: I can import it with VMware Workstation but not with the player. So the issue appears to be the player only. How can I fix this?

Reason I'd rather use the player is that it does not create 65 vmdk files on the disk, instead it keeps everything in 1 vmdk file.

Any idea how to get the player to work with BESR7.0?

The type of virtual disk created has nothing to do with "Player" vs. "Workstation". If you really want to have a monolithic growable disk (which most of us long-time users avoid like the plague due to nearly impossible troubleshooting, as well as other downsides to very large files), then just use the vmware-vdiskmanager to convert your virtual disk once you have imported the ghost image to it.

Still, the main issue is not being able to do direct link from sv2i to the player.

BESR 6.5 allowed this for both the player and WS.

On BESR 7.0 even after replacing the old DLL by the new one Player won't allow direct link. WS works fine though.

Is there a way to get the player to do a direct link to sv2i files created on BESR 7.0?
