VMware Workstation 11 // "Disk utilities are unavailable" when trying to expand a virtual hard disk of a powered off the virtual machine

Hello experts,

I am unable to expand a virtual hard disk of a powered off the virtual machine.

Procedure

1. I Select the virtual machine and select VM > Settings.

2. On the Hardware tab, I select the virtual hard disk to expand.

3. In the Disk utilities section, the "Disk utilities are unavailable" message shown below is displayed.

Hi,

You blacked out the name so can only guess, but this is expected if you have one or more snapshots open.

Hi Massimiliano,

Thanks for using WS. The disk utilities is not supported for shared vm, the workaround is unshare the VM and expand the disk and share it after that. Make sure you back up your data or VM before expand.

Hello tracywangtracywang,

This was the trick for me!

I unshared the VM and the utility menu became available.

Expanded the disk and shared it again.

Thanks!
