VMware Player Windows95 mouse jumps around with new driver

I have a virtual windows 95 installed in VMware player and had the standard driver set for the display.  It only allowed 16 colors and 640x480 resolution so I eventually found VMware SVGA II driver available after installing VMware Tools and installed it.  Now I can expand resolution and use 256 colors.

However, apparently related to that driver, now my mouse cursor is no longer locked into the VMware player; it instead jumps out of the player window, before snapping back inside, causing the virtual mouse cursor to bounce around wildly inside the player.

I never had this problem with the older virtual driver, and starting in Safe Mode doesn't have this problem.  What is going on and what do I do?

I have version 7.1.2 and have VMware tools installed

This may be 8 years late, but this worked for me:

Mouse movement is not smooth in a hosted virtual machine (1033416) (vmware.com)

Basically, Edit --> Preferences --> Input --> change optimize mouse for games to always
