VMWare player setup wizard ended prematurely - unable to install

I just downloaded the latest VMWare Workstation Player and tried to install. Am running Windows 10 Pro.

Got the error: VMWare player setup wizard ended prematurely - unable to install.

Tried installing in a custom folder as well as the default path. Tried quite a few times with same issue. I then tried to download and install VirtualBox - with same error.

I am actually trying to use VMWare and install Hadoop (Hortonworks) sandbox on my laptop. Hortonworks supported VMWare, VirtualBox and Docker. I started with VMWare and am getting nowhere. Any help is appreciated.

Am attaching the dialog error below:

I have looked at the log files in temp folder. I can see the entry "InstallProduct() returned: 1603". Is that the error code?

Is your host on a LAN/intranet, meaning that it's administrated by some network security/GPOs?  If yes, please ask the right people in charge of security/GPOs to take a look; even if no, you can try the same installation on a stand-alone machine, on which you have local admin rights and it should work without any glitch.

In another word, if it's an issue with installation, normally it's with security and/or access.  For example, your account may not be allowed to install then configure a Windows service, which is not specific to VMware only.

Hi gimmely

No - my laptop is on a private home network.

However, something curious happened. I was checking to make sure Virtualization was enabled in my bios. I have a Dell Precision 3510 laptop with a Xeon processor. I would have thought it was. Anyway I checked, and and it was enabled. In the process of course I had to reboot. Tried to install after that and this time the install went through. I am not sure what changed.

If this may help  others, here is what I did:

  1. Tried to Install VMWare Workstation many times - with no luck.
  2. Rebooted to check my Virtualization setting (hold down F12 during reboot or on Windows 10, modify settings to reboot). Virtualization was enabled.
  3. Tried to install again after reboot. This time it did install without any issues.

My guess: The reboot is doing something - not sure what.

Anyway, I can use the VM now - successfully installed Hortonworks Hadoop sandbox.
