VMWare Workstation Pro 16 - ... Fail ... use more virtual processor cores than the host supports

Hi,

I'm using the specifications:

System Manufacturer LENOVO
System Model 20T3S0RW00
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz, 2304 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date LENOVO N2YET32W (1.21 ), 23/09/2021

On BIOS - Intel Hyperthreading Enabled

On Device Manager - Processors, it shows 8 CPUs

When I try to configure a Machine with more than 8 cores I'm getting the following error:

"Powering on the virtual machine will fail because it is configured to use more virtual processor cores than the host supports"

I've tried to calculate vCPU to CPU with the following formula:
(Threads x Cores) x Physical CPU = Number vCPU
Source: What is a vCPU and How Do You Calculate vCPU to CPU? (datacenters.com)

While using CPU-Z I've got the following information:
Cores: 4
Threads: 8

(8 * 4) * 1 = 32 vCPU

I know that I'm missing something here

Please help me fill the gap

You use random blogs to look up specs ?
According to VMware the max  for the  vcpu parameter is 16.
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/16.0/workstation-pro-16-user-guide.pdf

Are you using 16.2 ?
Try last known good 16.1 instead

Ulli

How many virtual CPU cores does the VM actually need for what you’re going to do with it?

Thanks for your Reply!

I've Uninstalled VMWare Workstation Pro and Installed VMWare Workstation Pro 16.1.0
I tried to create a new VM with the following configuration:

Number of processes: 1
Number of cores per processes: 12

Total processes cores: 12

Still getting the same error message

Thanks for your reply!

This is a fundamental principle -

I just want to understand with the specs of my Host how many vCPU can I allocate the a specific VM

If your device manager shows 8 CPUs then the max number of vCPUs that should be assigned to a VM is 7.
Wonder why you are trying to use configurations that make no sense ... ???
