VMWare Player 14 on Linux cannot create or open Virtual Machines

I just completed a brand new installation of Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon and download and installed VMWare Player 14.

After creating a new Virtual Machine in vmplayer the files are created on disk, but it does not show up in the list of virtual machines to select. An error is written to the console: "Fail to open executable: No such file or directory"

The same happens when you try to Open a virtual machine and browser to the vmx file.

I can still launch the virtual machine from the commandline by specifying the .vmx file, just can't open it using the GUI to edit it.

Hello,

Please see the hardware version of the VM, looks like the player 14 supports Hardware verion 14.

I am not sure what you mean by Player 14 supports Hardware version 14 and how that relates to my problem?

I'm not trying to open a machine created by another version. I did a fresh install of VMWare Player 14 on Linux, created a new VM with default settings and even that new VM does not show in the VMWare Player GUI. If you re-launch the player, it's not there, and if you try to open it, it gives the error above.

To help us to debug the issues, could you pls help to provide following information:

    1. WS build
    2. Host OS, Guest OS information
    3. Detailed steps about how to reproduce this issue
    4. ui log (should be under %TEMP%, you can get detailed log location under "Help > About VMware Workstation ")
    5. vm related log file, you can get the vm log file location by choosing the VM within VM library, then check "Help > About VMware Workstation".
    6. if there is a vm crash, there should be also *.dmp, *.corez file under the same location as vm log file, pls collect them as well

I am having the same issue, but I found that if I double click on the VM's .vmx file it launches VMWare Player and my VM works normally.

I'm running Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, kernel 4.13.0-26-generic, VMware Workstation Player 14.1.1 build-7528167.

Same problem here.

Im running Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, kernel 4.13.0-37-generic, VMware Workstation Player 14.1.1 build-7528167.

Plus, when I run vmplayer from commandline I see this error:

I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.xml"

I’m also experiencing the very same problem on Ubuntu 18.04. running VMware Workstation 14 Player version 14.1.1 build-7528167

After Clicking on "Open a Virtual Machine" and selecting the .vmx, the VM doesn’t appear in the VMware Workstation Player main UI, so  it is impossible to change the VM configuration when it is not running.

Any help to fix this ongoing problem would be appreciated.

Also running LinuxMint 18.3, also unable to open a vmx, unless opening the file with vmware-player.

Output from terminal, plus the last line occurs when attempting to open a vmx file from within the app:

I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.xml"

<attempt to open vmx>

Fail to open executable: No such file or directory

I've checked the /etc/vmware/ directory and did not find a hostd directory or link (while showing hidden files and directories).
