I recently converted my physical machine to a virtual so I could have a copy of it after I formatted my computer. That was a few days ago and it's been running just fine since. Then, tonight, I added a shared folder through the vm's options settings and now it won't start. Every time I try, I get an error popup that says "The operation was cancelled by the user."
Both the host and guest machines are running Win10 Pro x64.
I did some Googling before posting here but none of the solutions I found worked for me. They also appear to be from 6 to 8 years ago.
Any ideas?
Please clarify something for me: You say you made a P2V copy and then formatted the host. What did you do next? You made a Virtual to physical image from that .vmdk (using what program?) and you use now that as the new host? Or did you install a fresh copy of Win10 on the formatted disk? Also, what do you use as a guest, some previously made virtual machines, or that virtual machine that you made with P2V? (excuse me but I'm tired and this can get confusing...)
Can you start the VM if you remove the shared folder first ?
Sorry for the delay, work got busy and I forgot about this until I needed it again...which is now. Ugh.
Here's how my physical machine is set up:
Physical Disk 0
|----------------------|
|--------||------------|
Drive C: Drive 😧
I use C: for Windows and all my main application, and I use 😧 for all of my personal files. This way, if I have to format C: for any reason, I mostly don't have to worry about losing anything I can't replace.
I used the VMWare converter to convert my (previous) physical machine to virtual (Drive C: ONLY). Basically, to save the state it was in so that I could easily go back to it should I forget to save or copy something before formatting, like my Outlook .pst file.
That virtual machine image, or .vmdk file, now sits on Drive 😧 as mentioned above. Once I had an image my machine, I formatted Drive C: and reinstalled Windows 10. Clean start. I'm typing to you from the new installation now.
Does that help? If you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you!

No, it makes no difference if the shared folder is turned on or not, unfortunately.
I tried posting a screenshot but the website is telling me that the image type is forbidden. Interesting, it's a simple JPG. Anyway, here's that screenshot:
I click the green "Start" button and this is what I get.
Please attach the VM's configuration (.vmx) file as well as its latest vmware.log file to your next reply.

From your snapshot I see you have provisioned 15.6 GB or RAM to the guest - how much RAM do you have in your host?
Also, try reducing the RAM allocated to the VM, it may help troubleshoot the problem.
yes that is my problem:
The operation was canceled by the user
So your problem is that an unknown operation was cancelled by the user.
Lets assume worst case and the operation in question is "shoot yourself in the foot"
If that operation was cancelled by the user then you have done everything right.
Case closed.
