VMSD corrupted file so unable to view or use snapshots.

hay,

i use VmWare Workstation 4.x, 5.x and now 6.x since years for software testing purpose.

Few days ago i had a problem with one virtual machine and have noticed after that my twenty snapshot were not visible when accessing Snapshot manager.

After few research, i noriced that my *.vmsd file was empty... And didn't find any advice for rebuilding this king of file.

I can't never build it manualy cause i have several snapshots i can't identify with numbered who snapshot is who. (display name, createtime...).

I would be glad if someone could give me an advice (vmrun don't rebuid vmss files and i read "vmware-cmd VC1.3to201_standard.vmx createsnapshot addedforrecovey" which is only for ESX).

Please help.

Best regards.

Bertrand.

do you have a single-branch line of snapshots ?

Then it is quite easy in most cases.

Just delete the corrupt vmsd file and create a new snapshot - this should create a new vmsd.

If you have several branches it is more tricky - in this case more data is required to help

Hay,

thanks for you answer.

I have in fact several branches so i don't know which snapshot is parent or children and in which branch as i only see in the directory *.vmdk files that don't give me any information about the place they are in the branch.

I tried to make a snapshot but only the new one made was in the *.vmsd file.

As i have branches you tell it's a bit hard to do. Do you have any documents on how to achieve the vmsd rebuild ?

Best regards.

What type of vmdk do you use ? - one-piece growing or any of the other types ?

Hmmm - you use one -piece growing disks - that makes this story quite tricky.

Are you seriously interested in this VM ? - there is some work required to sort this out ... is the VM in use right now ?

Hay,

to answer, this VmWare is not running and i use it for testing purpose.

I can eventually make a new one but i will take between 10 to 20 hours work to have something similar.

Anyway thanks for all you post and for trying to help.

Best regards.

Hi

to resolve this puzzle you need the dsfok-tools.

Then you run this command against all vmdk-files like this:

dsfo.exe filename.vmdk 512 800 filename.vmdk.desc

this will produce a bunch of small *.desc files.

Zip them all into a single archive and attach here

Hi,

thanks a lot for the information.

You will find requiered files en attachments.

I made files by a batchfile, i guess it's OK.

One more time, i appreciate the time you're taking to help me in the vmsd reconstruction.

Regards.

Hi

its beyond my skills to restore the vmsd - file.

But I believe I was able to puzzle out the tree - see

Does that look familiar ?

If yes - well there is no "if"actually - this is the tree as it is now

Now you can restore single branches ...

Is your VM still running right now ? - I hope not ...

Suggestion ...

you can create something like a linked clone that starts at any of the tree-endpoints.

One linked clone could start with snapshot 6 - containing the data from 6, 9 and 8

Another one could start at 5 and contains the data from 3.

Oh dear - I guess this looks pretty nightmarish to you ...

Anyway - I still have the files on my desktop - if you want me to restore one of the branches let me know soon

Ulli
