VM WS 6 with ACE problems, newbie, Please help!

Hi friends,

Cant get printer to work in XP guest OS/Vista host. I am trying

everything, but it still says "Cannot communicate with Printer".

Oh in case this is about the USB, yes I can access the removable usb HDD as a network folder, but not viewed in My Computer, must access through My Network Places. So I guess usb is not recognized. When i insert a flash

drive, no response.

I have put in much effort already, and have been reading hundreds of these posts from multiple topics here at vmware.com to no avail...yet:-)

PC Info: Host OS; Vista Basic, networked with a Dell running XP home and a working Dell AIO Printer 942

Guest OS; XP home, fully updated with SP2 and Device manager

riddled with yellow question marks.

Guest OS probs; 1 of 4 hard drives recognized, 1 of 2 disk

drives recognized, no usb drives recognized, and no hopes of getting printer to work. Not even worth installing progs on this guest, (boobs on a bull),,Please help!!

any help on anything would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. And I have UNIX this semester, wish me luck on getting that to work in a vm, theoretically a fully functioning vm on removeable storage, ahahahahhahah!

William, please post the content of the .vmx file (it's a text file containing your guest os configuraton file) it can be found in the guest os directory on your host filesystem

(or use windows search function for *.vmx files)

This typically means you are missing device drivers. What devices are reporting an issue?

I purchased phone support and Bobak helped me fix all, thank you Kevin and everyone else that ran to my aid. These forums are now part of my life and part of my start pages.

As for the solution, we disconected the usb devices, restarted the vm, and like disableing hardware in device manager then restarting to reset the drivers, vm did the same, also the other disk drive that wasnt recognized was found by just switching to the other drive from within the attached devices menu in vm. Bobak informed that one drive in inside another, makes sense since they both share the same ide cable. Wellnow all usb devices are recognized and I can access both cd and dvd drives.

The only outstanding issue right now with my xp guest is I cannot get the printer to communicate to my networked/shared printer on my spare comp(dell). If you have ideas, i certainly would welcome a stab.

Right now I am downloading Solaris 10 for my 2nd vm, and have joined the forums for linux at [b]http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/[/b][/u] for future assistance. My brother is sending me a canned vm of his of Redhat Linux. Cant wait.....p.s. When I was daunted at the power of vmware, I rebelled and was scared now I love it. I just bought it 2 days ago.

Thanks for the update. Bobak is a good guy and I am glad he was able to help you with your issues.

Connect to a network printer from the guest should be no different than connecting from a physical Windows XP machine. Can you ping the spare comp(dell) ? Can you login remotely to the spare comp(dell) from the guest?

No thanks, i tried that then my vdmk or whatever file got corrupted or lost its link to the vmx file, and I lost my whole virtual machine, I then spentt he next 5 hours trying to reinstall and reconfigure my vm.

What i did was, oopened the vmx file with notepad, then copied and pasted the data into a new notepad file, renamed it to send to you, and in that process somehow the files became lost or corrupt. Don't know how or why but with vmware, par for the course.

Spend 5 minutes trying to improve something in vmware leads me to countless hours of repair. It seems best for me to leave well enough alone. although nothing is well..
