Using VMware workstation 7 on Win 7 laptop

Hi All,

Out of curiosity, does anyone actually ever try to install VMware workstation on Windows 7 with 4 GB RAM (Intel® Core™ i5-520M Processor (3M Cache, 2.40 GHz)

I'm planning to run SharePoint server 2010 beta on this laptop for a demo and wondering if it is recommended or not ?

Hello.

I'm running Workstation 7 on Windows 7 64-bit with 8 GB RAM and Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz. I also ran earlier versions on less hardware than what you listed, and was able to run some decent workloads in virtual machines.

As long as this is just a SharePoint demo, you might be able to get away with it - unless the installer requires 4 GB of RAM. MS recommends 4 GB for the evaluation. If you have a 64-bit host, you might be in slightly better shape, as you could use all 4 GB of RAM, but either way it will likely work. The question is how well.

Probably the best way to find out is to load it up and see how it works.

I run WS 6.5 on a recent (1 year) Dell gaming laptop with 4 GB RAM with Windows 7 64-bit. I actually have ESX 4 and Vcenter running within WS 6.5 for education. You need a 64-bit version of Windows to use 3 GB or more due to the limitations of 32-bit Windows.

You guys probably right I'll reinstall my current Win 7 32 bit lappy with the 64 bit windows 7 to get the maximumuse of 4 GB RAM

You should not experience any problems running VMware Workstation and SharePoint Server 2010 on your hardware configuration.
