Using Standalong converter vm in Workstation Pro

So I read everything I could find about creating a VM from by bootable Windows 7 system. I've tried adding the vmdk/vmx files to a new VM with every variation I can find, SCSI/IDE/Sata, etc. Nothing works. It always boots to an error message saying

This is apparently possible, but I can't find the combination that works. Any help would be appreciated.

no need to create the VM up front. The Converter client that runs on the source (you Window 7 system) will create all the VM's required files with selecting VMware Workstation as the target format.
