After carefully reading the instructions, I upgraded all my XPsp2(32) VMs to workstation 6. I then set VMare tools to upgrade automatically in the workstation 6 preferences. Each VM is set to obey the workstation settings. On booting up the VMs I would see the Windows Installer dialog saying preparing to install, and after a few seconds it goes away.
HOWEVER, all the vmware tools versions say build 34685, and the workstation status message says I need to upgrade my vmware tools. And new version 6 features don't seem to be working. I even tried forcing a Tools upgrade by using the workstation menu VM - Install Tools. Nada.
How can I get Vmware tools to upgrade to the new version?
Thanks

OK, problem sorted. Here's the deal. This problem only applies to Windows guests 2k and later.
I have a mapped network drive (D) that all my VMs share for My documents. Using the Computer Manager I set the drive letter of the CD/DVD (E) to come AFTER the mapped network drive. The Vmware tools installer sets the CD/DVD drive to an ISO image, and this causes Windows to get confused about where the drive is, the tools install fails.
Workaround
1) Shut down the Guest
2) Set the CD/DVD to the ISO image manually (the vmwareInstallFolder\VMware Workstation\Windows.iso
3) Start the Guest, and use the Computer Manager (in Admin Tools) to reset the CD/DVD drive to the correct drive letter.
4) Then run Setup.exe from the cd/dvd drive.
5) When its done, shut down and remove the iso setting from the CD/DVD
6) reboot the guest and reset the CD/DVD drive letter again.
Hope that helps someone.

After doing this 6 times (Waaaa) I have a revised procedure
1) Shut down the guest
2) Set the CD/DVD to the ISO image manually (the vmwareInstallFolder\VMware Workstation\Windows.iso
3) Start the Guest, and run setup.exe from it's location, even though it has coopted the mapped drive letter.
4) When prompted to restart, don't. Cancel and shut down.
5) Reset the CD/DVD to autodetect
6) Reboot, and your drive letter settings will be restored.
