Upgrade from RedHat Workstation 6 to 12.5.2 successful but launching windows workstation fails.

I was able to successfully upgrade from version 6 of VMWare player to version 12.5.2. I used the following commands to uninstall then install the 12.5.2 version.

vmware-installer --uninstall-product vmware-player

./VMware-Player-12.5.2-4638234.x86_64.bundle --eulas-agreed --required

I then tried to start my exising windows 7 workstation that works on Player 6. The virtual machine loads past BIOS. Then it displays:

boots past bios then says "starting symantec endpoing encryption - full disk edition version 8.2.1MP6HF3

Please wait...Starting driver...

When I start vmplayer from the command line I see the following messages to standard out.

[root@ins-rhel-864 linux]# vmplayer

If I uninstall VMWare Player 12.5.2 and go back to version 6 everything works perfectly. Where else should I be looking? I also didnt see anthing in the vmware.log file where the vm loads from while it was trying to boot that seemed to be the smoking gun.

Hi,

The thing from what you write down here that appears to be the initial cause of concern is:

libGL error: failed to load driver: nouveau

libGL error: unable to load driver: nouveau_dri.so

Player is trying to load a 3D driver for your nvidia card (nouveau) and if your windows VM has 3D enabled than that might be what you are bumping into.

Nouveau is the open source driver and frankly I doubt it is sufficient for full 3D support, so instead I suggest to download the drivers for your OS from the nvidia website and install them.

Then try again.

I have the ability to install the latest driver from Nvidia for my RedHat 6.8 workstation. However, I am not sure this is the best thing to do as I really cannot mess this machine up. I am trying to decide if I even have the drivers installed now. It does not appear that we have nvidia drivers installed. I guess what I am asking is there a reason that I now need these additional drivers installed that I did not need on version 6?

When using the old version 6 player I can enable and disable "accelerate 3d graphics" and it boots both ways.

Below is with vmware 12.5.2 installed. This is the logs from the bootup vmware.log file. I have only included the last part of the logs. I included the last few lines displayed from when it boots the bios. Then it hangs and stops as soon as it is done booting the bios and trying to boot the vm. The display during this time displays a black screen that says:

boots past bios then says "starting symantec endpoing encryption - full disk edition version 8.2.1MP6HF3

Please wait...Starting driver...

Here are the logs. I viewed these to standard out while booting using "tail -f vmware.log". This is with "accelerate 3d graphics" checked.

This message appears that vmware tools is not installed. I start the VM then try to install it and I get the first error that states

Vmtools for this virtual machine has not been found on your computer. installation will not be able to continue. There may be a version available online; would you like to downlaod and install vmware tools if found?

So i click download and install. the next error I get is:

Could not connect to teh update server. Check your internet settings or contact your system administrator.

I am now looking into why I cant get out. I ran a wireshark capture and I only see syn packets to 184.29.106.42 and no syn ack.

One more thing I noticed which probably doesnt mean anything is that if I try to install version 7, 12.5.2, or 12.5.1 they all  use the vmplayer installer 2.1.0 which I dont think the version 6 uses.

Any ideas if I am even going down the right road trying to install vmtools? Is there soemthing else you all think is going on?

I believe I have successfully installed the correct vm tools package. I am not 100% how to check. But I went to the following URL:

https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/ws/12.5.2/4638234/linux/packages/

Then I ran:

vmware-instalvmware-installer --install-component=vmware-tools-linux-10.0.10-4301679.x86_64.component

This produced no error. I then tried to run it again to verify it was installed. It did error stating it was installed.

I then tried to boot the vm using player 12.5.2 and it still produces a different error. I have included some comments inline with the errors.

I only let it wait for about 2 minutes.

The error now states "vmware tools are not running in the guest" . What does this mean? Do i need to have the adminstrators of the vmdk windows image install or do something? Or do i need to do something on my redhat workstation?

So i got vmware-tools installed. I am an idiot. I needed to set the player preferences to download via proxy. So i configured my proxy settings and they all downloaded and say its updated. I then restarted the vm and I still now have the same issue. I am at a loss today. The error message now is after the bios loads:

2016-11-22T19:01:11.065Z| vmx| I125: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

I am not even sure these are stopping me from loading the VM.

Hi,

You are still just getting the "please wait loading driver" screen and that's it?

I'm afraid your excerpts on the vmware.log file are not very helpful.

I need to see the whole log (attached as a file, not copy & paste content!) in order to at least get some idea.

Installing VMware Tools in the guest only works when the guest actually runs, you can't install it before the guest has booted.

What you have installed from the sounds of it is the VMware Tools .iso image into the VMware Workstation setup.

FWIW, VMware Tools installed or not would not normally stop you from booting a VM, it just makes things better (adds integrated clipboard management, shared folders, more performant drivers etc..)

One thing you could try is to login remotely via RDP.

In regards to the 3D / not 3D issue, I personally would try to boot the guest without 3D enabled, with the nouveau errors that part suggests it would not work anyways at this moment.

Of course the full disk encryption part using a driver is suspect as well, especially as that appears to be the last thing you see the VM do.

However if it works in Workstation 6 then I would expect it to work in Workstation 12.

If that part is causing you the trouble then you could try with a fresh copy of the VM, if available, and make sure that it hasn't upgraded its virtual hardware when you boot. Preferably even switch off the auto-upgrade of the virtual hardware.

This is the non-working vmware player 12 player12-vmware.log file this was the original vmware.log i renamed. I did not install vmtools. I let it wait for about 60 seconds before I powered it down. During that time I only saw the BIOS load > Then it goes to a black screen that states:

boots past bios then says "starting symantec endpoing encryption - full disk edition version 8.2.1MP6HF3

Please wait...Starting driver...

The last line displayed after the bios loaded was

2016-11-23T18:02:45.281Z| vcpu-0| I125: BIOS-UUID is 56 4d 6a 06 fd 3f 8c 2a-de ad 93 bd 6e 2e 99 db

I have also included the working log from the player 6 version. I have renamed it player6-vmware.log.

Hi,

Seems you only waited 2 minutes on the player 12 one before a shut down.

I guess you waited longer before, it is more of an observation as anything else. I would have waited longer to see what would be written in the logs.

However the most interesting (puzzling?) part I see in your logs is that it appears that you have BOTH vmware Player 6 as well as Player 12 installed at the same host at the same time?

At least the hostname is the same, the processor looks like it is the same and the logs are only 4 minutes apart from each other which seems a bit fast for a complete uninstall/reboot/install. Even location UUID of the VM matches which really makes me believe it is the same host.

If that's the case then I'm not surprised on one of them not working as you can't have both products installed at the same time.

The products depend on kernel modules and they both need a different set and those kernel modules need to be properly loaded/unloaded. You could do that manually, but I'm not 100% sure that the installer does, so my suggestion is to reboot between installs.

I'm a bit confused as your initial post is about uninstalling 6.0.6 and subsequently installing Player 12.x, but now it looks like Player 6 is installed next to Player 12.x
