Upgrade VMware Tools 12.5 to 14.1

Hey guys,

i updated my VMware Workstation Pro 12.5 to 14.1 a few weeks ago.

I created 4 VMs with VMware Workstation Pro 12 compatibility months ago. Now I wanted to upgrade these VMs. So i ran the upgrade wizard and altered the VM.

Now here comes the problem i have. The option for upgrading the VMware tools in the VM isnt available as you can see in the screenshot:

Do you guys have any idea? Removing the old VMware Tools in the VM didn't work.

I don't know why the option is disabled/greyed out.

But you could download the VMware Tools manually and mount the ISO into the VM and initiate setup. The latest version is 10.2.

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?productId=614&downloadGroup=VMTOOLS1020

Or you could also check the C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation for the VMware Tools ISO files.

windows.iso - Windows Vista and later

winPreVista.iso - Windows XP, Windows 2003

Hi Tobi,

With the VM running, from the menu VM -> Removable Devices -> CD/Sata -> Settings.

you'll get a dialog for changing CD settings, select "Use ISO Image file"

Use the browse button and navigate to:

C:\Program Files(x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\

Select the "Windows.iso" (this is the CD image that contains the VMware Tools)

Then check the "Connected" checkbox under the Device Status group.

Click OK on the dialog.

Now you should be able to navigate from within your VM to the CD and start setup or if auto run is enabled then the VMware tools installer will come up by itself.

Hope this helps,
