Unable to start my VMware v5.5.8 in Debian/Linux after upgrading from v5.5.7.

Jump to solution

Hi.

I am using Debian with its kernel v2.6.22-1-k7 (#1 SMP Sun Jul 29 15:15:55 UTC 2007 i686). I had VMware v5.5.7 and upgraded to v5.5.8 (installed into /home/Programs/VMware558/ for doc, man, and lib), but I am having problems starting my VMware even after running vmware-any-any-update115.tar.gz and making modules successfully.

When I try to start my old Windows 2000 SP4 VMware v5.5.7 guest image, I get these three errors:

"Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 138.0, got 137.0. You have an incorrect version of the 'vmmon' kernel module. Try reinstalling VMware Workstation."

"Failed to initalize monitor device."

"Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to."

Here is what I did:

vmware-any-any-updates were developed by Petr Vandrovic but it seems like he longer works for VMWare. He had an enormous knowledge of computer hardware and software and once even helped me solving a very specific bug which affected VMWare BIOS - the solution is now a part of a mainline distribution.

Please, mark the thread as answered and my answer as correct. Thank you Smiley Happy

Try this unofficial (yet correct and working) vmware any any update vmware-any-any-update117d.tar.gz.

If it still doesn't work for you then raise VMMON_VERSION_V6 in vmmon-only/include/iocontrols_compat.h.

Thanks! That seems to work. I didn't test enough though. So what happened to the original developer for this vmware-any-any-update package? Oooh, I see we have a VMware forum on Google Group.

Dang it. I upgraded my Kernel to 2.6.26-1-i686. I reran the .runme.pl for vmware-any-any-update117d.

I tried to start my Windows 2000 guest image and got this error: "Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 138.0. got 168.0.

You have an incorrect version of the 'vmmon' kernel module. Try reinstalling VMware Workstation."

I tried again and again, but it won't start. What's wrong now? Smiley Sad Oh and I am using gcc v4.1.3.

Thank you in advance. Smiley Happy

I also tried uninstalling v5.5.8 and reinstalling, but that didn't help at all. FYI (use if you don't like the format below):

Try this unofficial (yet correct and working) vmware any any update vmware-any-any-update117d.tar.gz.

If it still doesn't work for you then raise VMMON_VERSION_V6 in vmmon-only/include/iocontrols_compat.h.

Where is vmmon-only/include/iocontrols_compat.h? I don't see it with locate command. Smiley Sad

Also, how do I undo the "answered" status? Smiley Wink

Unpack vmmon.tar archive, locate the file, pack it again, like

tar -xf vmmon.tar

edit the file using your favorite editor

tar -cf vmmon.tar vmmon-only

Overwrite the old file in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source, run vmware-config.pl

I found vmmon_version section, but did not see VMMON_VERSION_V6 (isn't this for VMware v6? If so, then I am using v5.5.8):

#define VMMON_VERSION (168 << 16 | 0)

#define VMMON_VERSION_MAJOR(v) ((uint32) (v) >> 16)

#define VMMON_VERSION_MINOR(v) ((uint16) (v))

Am I missing something? Smiley Sad

Does it finally work for you after increasing the value of VMMON_VERSION?

Not yet. What value do I put in and which part? Examples would be nice.

Try to change from

    #define VMMON_VERSION           (168 << 16 | 0)

to

    #define VMMON_VERSION           (138 << 16 | 0)

in vmmon-only/include/iocontrols.h file.

Updated vmmon-only/include/iocontrols_compat.h's line to have: define VMMON_VERSION (138 << 16 | 0)

tar -cf vmmon.tar vmmon-only/

Yes, I'm saying that and you have to find someone who has a sufficient knowledge in Linux kernel to patch 5.5.8 VMWare modules so that they work in the newest kernels.
