Unable to install XP - Bluescreens on start of text base part.

Hi,

Been trying to do some testing of workstation (current version) and come across a problem. I cannot get the XP install to go past the start of the text based install wothout bluescreening with an 0x0000007F error. I have managed to install other os's (linux) with no problem but XP just wont have it. I have tried both home (SP3) and Pro (sp1) using the buslogic and lsi drivers with no luck so am hoping someone can give me some pointers on whats going wrong...

I have had this working before but just had to replace the system drive in my work station dues to a failure so thought I would take the ooportunity to put in 2 drives in a raid 0 array. I am also running Vista 64 (which I was before as well) with 4gb ram with a core 2 cpu. everything else is fine and working until i come to install xp!

any thoughts anyone?

I notice that you're running Workstation 6.5.0. 6.5.1 is available for download. Not sure if it will fix your specific issue, but maybe try updating to 6.5.1?

Are you using SCSI disks? If so, please try IDE disks instead.

Tried both types of disk to no avail. Just finished a couple of hours of memtest which all passe dno problems. Also just tried an install of server 2003 got the same issue with a bluescreen. Still cnat workout why when the host os is fine and linux (various flavours) install fine.

This pc has run workstation and xp as a guest before with no issues it's only since switching to runnign the host os on a raid 0 array that I've had probelms but I cant see how that would effect things.

I'm sorry, I have no idea. MAybe you try to add "mainMem.useNamedFile=FALSE" to your vmx, but I'm not sure if that will help.

Are you installing from a real CD or DVD ?

If yes - make sure you enable Legacy Emulation for the CD-device

Well I have tried from a real XP pro cd but also iso for xp home and server 2003. Ubuntu was done from both no probs. Is there any sort of logging I could enable or check that would give some hints?

ok in an effort to rule out hardware issues I have installed Sun's virtual box and so far so good the XP Pro install is going strong and well past the point that workstation fails each and every time. Very curious..

ok so XP Pro sp1 and 2003 server sp1 both installed in Virtual box and running no problems at all.... something is definately wrong with workstation I think.

I think I may uninstall it and drop back a version or 2 and test again.

Why don't you migrate your Windows XP and 2003 from VirtualBox to VMware?

well so much for importing a working vm... after importing windows starts and immediately while booting bluescreens with the same error. looks like a driver issue can choose safemode and get as far as loading mup.sys the BSOD.

In which way did you import the machine? Did you change the drivers while or after migration? Can you start Windows in safe mode?

I used vmware converter to hot clone the running vm and no I didnt change the drivers while migrating and couldn't afterwards as it wont boot not even in safemode. Whats the normal method used for doing it?

You used one of the normal ways, that means you used VMware Converter. Within this way, there is no (additional) need for changing drivers, because Converter is doing this "on the fly".

I'm sorry, I'm at the end of knowledge here.

Can you attach the vmware.log and .vmx file from the directory containing the XP Guest after hitting the blue screen during installation?

looked at your original Post - you said you runng vista 64 as the HOst, this could cause problems, Firstly hosted enviroments are tricky to get working 100%,

it Could be the Raid you setup, i know its alot of work,

try using a sinlge drive then vista - vmware server - os / if this works then its the raid .

Hey anything is possible.

Good Luck - hope you come write.
