Hi Experts,
I'm having an annoying issue with my vmware workstation 8.
I installed a new VM (windows 2008 r2 standard), and for some weird reason i'm unable to install the Vmware tools. (usually it starts automatically).
I read an article that i need to power off the VM machine, and the go to: Vm (menu) - Settings - remove the Floppy drive, and remove the cd-rom dirve, and to add them again.
Also i read that i need to check out that the floppy drive properties is set to automatic - and not to use the *.flp file.
further more, i edited the config file (*.vmx) of the VM, and i changed the line whereit says:easyInstall.keepFloppy = "TRUE" to "FALSE"...and nothing changed.
Please advise...i'm considering to install the vmware workstation all over from scratch, and i really don't want to do that.
ere is a screen shot of the result that i'm getting after trying to install the vmware tools from the menu (screen shot attached).
Please advise.
Try
1) Can't tell if you can power down the VM. If so - do it - frst try shutdown from within the VM of you can shutdown the guest from the power menu. (really the same thing). Otherwise shut down the entire machine.
2) Under edit virtual machine settings remove the floppy drive (most machines these days don't have them). If you do have a floppy look at the right pane of the device screen and uncheck "connected" Don't check connect at power on.
3) See if you can power up the VM . If you can and the message still appears go to the VM tab and see if you can "cancel VMware Tools install". If it says "Reiinsatll VMwa tools" try that .The OS should then open a dialog showing VMware retools mounted t on the CD-ROM (select run seup64.exe). IF the dialog g box does not appear go to the CDROM under Explorer and run the setup from there.
If none of the above work the is in fact a problem with the easy install which does download and attempts to install l tools automatically on Windows guesst That's why it is suggested to install them manually. If in fact you do have to reinstall the OS (say because it won' get beyond the message) choose custom install rather than easy install and tell the program you will install the OS later. If will still define the machine a Server 2008 R2 becaued it uses the last OS you tried. You migh need to use Explorer to delete the folderrWindows 2008 R2 because the VM won't install the .vdmk using the same name - or use another.
Tha's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck
looks like Easy Install did not finsih cleanly.
you can still connect the "windows.iso" manually and then install the vmware-tools

Hi mfelker,
Thank you for you'r help. i managed to find the directory of the vmware tools and i copied the folder to the VM i needed to install the vmware tools on.
In case i'll need to some more VM's on my home lab i'll install them like you suggestec (custom mode), and hope for the best.
In the worst case scenario, i'll reinstall vmware from scratch.
Thank you and continumm for the support.
Best regards,
