Unable to download VMware tools - There was a problem updating a software component.

Host - openSUSE 15.0

guest - any

VMware W/S Linux 14.1.2

This was not an issue on openSUSE Leap 42.3 but I have upgraded to openSUSE 15.0

All is working ok when I start and load VMs but when I try to install VMWare tools, the download begins, asks for root privileges which are given but then fails with the error

"There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator."

Nothing about vmware tools in the log at this point.

Other than tools, everything else is working.

In case that there is some problem with the manifest files matching up with the online downloads (I can't say definitely it is); you could try to download manually the appropriate VMware Tools for the guest VM. The current release is 10.3.

For Linux guest VMs, there is also the open-vm-tools option.

OpenSUSE 15 is not supported on Workstation at the moment. Try an earlier version.

Thanks, it tries to download version 10.2.5. I downloaded the 10.3 version as you suggested and was able to mount the iso and install vmtools that way. Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
I know you have marked [bluefirestorm] answer as correct answer, but it's not. Downloading tools manually not an answer. I have same problem with 14'th and 15'th versions.

Vmware is the absolute worst... trying to find the latest VMware tools is the biggest PITA ever. Making a collective website is not hard.

I'm in the same boat. I'm running a PopOS/Ubuntu 19.04 host and am trying to install VMware tools into my Windows 10 guest, and keep running up against dead ends. I'd love to be able to just download the tools in the Win10 guest and install them, but I can't find a download anywhere.

I filed a ticket with VMware. I hope they can help. Otherwise I'll be asking for a refund, as I just bought it today.

A relevant snippet from my /tmp/vmware-$user/vmware-install-issue.log:

I think a relevant error is `CDS_BULLETIN_NOT_DOWNLOADING_ERROR`, and that installing the bulletin returned `installerStatus 3, exitCode 1`.

Google doesn't turn up much with those keywords.
