Unable to connect WebCam to Workstation 10

Running Workstation 10.0.1 build-1379776 on a HP 8570p laptop. Windows 8.1 x64 Host OS. It has a built in Chicony webcam which works fine in the host OS.

Workstation sees this as an available device, listing it as "Chicony HP HD Webcam [Fixed]". When I select "Connect (Disconnect from host)" absolutely nothing happens. I've tried this with Win7 x64 and Win8.1 x64 guests. Same result.

Is there some way to make this webcam available to the guest OS?

Possibly, however you'll need to install the HP Universal Camera Driver! Smiley Wink

Yes. The virtual machine correctly connects other removable devices. Just not this webcam.

And where would I install that? The webcam is already working just fine on the host and already using the driver you quoted. The guest does not see/recognize the webcam as a device so there is no opportunity/need to install the driver??? I suspect this will do diddly squat but I will try installing the driver in advance before connecting the webcam. Should not have to do this.

Edit: As expected that did nothing. Installer complains there is no webcam present (and there isn't; not inside the guest).

Why the attitude!?  I was just trying to help!  Obviously if you connect a device to a VM and the Guest OS and/or VMware Tools does not contain the necessary Drivers then you'd need to install it in the Guest! Smiley Wink  Additionally if the software checks for the presence of the device while installing then you'd connect the device before installing and not try installing with the device disconnected!

That said, just because it shows that a device can be connected to a VM doesn't actually mean it is supported.  HP may have the device configured to only function natively.

Also after you initially connected the device did you even look in Device Manager to see if there were any Flags and or Unknown Devices?

Chill Bro Chill.

I wasn't giving you "attitude". Merely stating that nothing happened when trying the suggestions. As expected.

In answer to of your followup questions: There is nothing to see in the guest (in device manager or anywhere else). The device does not make the "connect" to the guest. Hence "nothing to see here folks" inside the guest. Because of this I did not expect installing drivers inside the guest to have any effect.

All I was trying to convey was:

- The device works on the host (which means no need to install drivers on the host)

- Other devices work connecting to this host (which means no need install/update vmware tools)

- "Connect"ing the device to the guest fails to actually connect the device (which means nothing to do inside the guest)

Let me rephrase my question: Does anyone else have this hardware and have they been able to connect it to a guest os? If so, HOW??? Barring that: I've been all over the basics. Any additional troubleshooting ideas? Or confirmation this device does/does not work with workstation?

In your OP you state "When I select "Connect (Disconnect from host)" absolutely nothing happens." and now your state ""Connect"ing the device to the guest fails to actually connect the device..." and that actually is not nothing nor the same thing!  If in your OP you had actually said it doesn't connect at all then I'd have said... If I had a situation like that and assuming it's a USB Device then I'd change the debug level in the VM's settings and enable USB debugging and then try connecting again.  Then review the logs for some clues as to why the device is not actually connecting.  Maybe even see if adding quirks to the config file helps.  Have a look at: Problems using some USB devices in a virtual machine (774)

Ugh that looked like crap when I posted. Attempt 2 to pretty this up.

Again, this is a webcam physically installed in the laptop. The device works in the host os. It is using the latest manufacturer supplied drivers. The latest VMware tools are installed in the guest. Vmware recognizes it as "Chicony HP HD Webcam [Fixed]".  When I attempt to connect the device to the guest NOTHING happens. It does not connect, no error message. NOTHING.

I turned on debugging for the VM and see a driver error for the device (see below). I've pretty much given up on getting this to work.

Maybe the driver is constantly talking to the webcam and that is why the disconnection fails, when you think about it it could make sense since its integrated and not supposed to be disconnected.

You might find out more by using some of these device-tools:

Hi,

This needs to be addressed

I'm on a Toshiba L50-A laptop running a fully updated Windows 8.1 host, and a Windows 8.1 guest.

I also get a "driver error" and "error 4" on the logs while connecting my integrated webcam. Same thing happens with bluetooth adapter, and also card reader - all of those are USB2 native devices.

Funny thing is that when i connect an external USB device to the USB2 port on my laptop, suddenly all of those devices are connected to the guest without a problem!

Where can i report this to VMWare dev team?

Check the log:

In my case I have an HP Elitebook 8570w and had the same issue reported here.  I had VMWare Workstation 9 working with out issue with a Windows 7 host and Windows 7 guest.  I wiped my laptop and installed Windows 8.1 with VMWare Workstation 10 and added a Windowws 8.1 guest. The integrated web cam worked fine on my Windows 8.1 host, but when I tried to disconnect it from my host and connect it to the Windows 8.1 guest that I have I would receive an error from Workstation 10 indicating that the driver installation failed.  After some research I found that the driver installed on the host for the web cam was a generic driver installed by Windows 8.1.  I then grabbed the updated driver from HP and everything is working for me now.

Same problem here.

I have an HP Laptop DV6 i7 running Win7 x64 with an inbuilt webcam. I have been trying to get the webcam recognized in Workstation 10 however no luck, it's really frustrating and I would appreciate any help. Running Win7 x32 in the Workstation 10.

a)

selecting VM > Removable Devices > Chicony HP Truevision > Connect

I then get a message saying,   Connection of device Chicony ...    Unsuccessful - Driver Error.   I cannot install the Chicony driver because the device cannot be connected in the first place (in VMware). Running the driver install (setup) simply says, no device.

b)

tried installing a Universal webcam driver as well from the HP site, no luck with that either.

Try disabling USB3 in BIOS settings and see if it helps. It solved my problems (at the cost of USB3 compatibility)

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll give that a go, but I'm not comfortable in disabling USB3 compatibility. I'm hoping VMWare will have a fix for this.

Same problem with an Asus K55vd laptop, windows 8.1, Workstation 11.1, webcam detected in the vm "Removable devices" menu as "Chicony USB 2.0 HD UVC WebCam".   Here is how to fix Camera And Webcam not working In Windows 10

1- Find the This PC icon in your Desktop and right click on it. From the right-click context menu, find and click on the option named Manage.

2- This opens a new window named Computer Management. Click on Device Manager from the left window pane. Now look for an entry named Imaging devices in the right window pane.

Click on the arrow associated with it to expand it. You will now see an entry named Integrated Webcam. Right click on it and select Uninstall option.

3- When asked for device uninstall confirmation, click on OK button. This will cause the Imaging devices entry to disappear.

4- Now right click on the username of your computer which is displayed as the very first entry in the right pane of Computer Management window. Select Scan for hardware changes option from the context menu that appears.

5- That’s it. The Imaging devices entry will re-appear and your problem with the webcam is now fixed.

6- If at any point in time you find difficulties in finding the Imaging devices entry, you can right click on the Device Manager, then click on View and then on Show hidden devices.
