ULM: Failed to create virtual processor 0 after win11 upgrade

The workstation worked good before April 2023. While after one win11 upgrade, it did not work that the VM could not come up anymore.

The vmware.log shows as below:

2023-06-01T16:01:18.555+08:00| vmx| W003: ULM: Failed to create virtual processor 0, res 0xc0350050.
2023-06-01T16:01:18.555+08:00| vmx| I005: Module 'ULM' power on failed.
2023-06-01T16:01:18.555+08:00| vmx| I005: VMX_PowerOn: ModuleTable_PowerOn = 0

How to solve it?

Are you running a Windows Insider Canary channel build? We've seen a lot of this recently in the forum and almost all of the posters have received an Canary channel update to Windows 11 that broke Workstation.

The only suggestions we have so far are to

  • Try disabling hyper-v entirely in the Canary channel version of Windows and see if you can run on the VMware hypervisor, or
  • File a report with Microsoft that they broke compatibility with a production application, or
  • Drop back to a "officially released" Windows 11 22H2 22621.xxxxx of Windows.

Thanks for the suggestion! The 1st one can work it around.

Below are the steps:

1. Open Windows Power Shell as admin

2. Input "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off" and run it.

3. Restart win11 OS.

After above 3 steps, all things come back.
