Things to consider when updating Windows 8 guest to 8.1?

Product: VMware Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769

Host OS version: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1

Guest OS version: Windows 8 x64

Hi, I have finally decided to update my Windows 8 guest to Windows 8.1. I've searched the documentation, discussions and blogs, but did not find much information about how to do it with Workstation 9.

As far as I understand, I need to upgrade my Workstation 9 to 10 for Windows 8.1 support.

Somebody suggested to me, that I have to change the settings for my guest. I have to change the setting guest operating system version to Windows 8.1 prior to running the update for Windows.

Anything else? Anybody ever tried this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have not tested upgrading to Windows 8.1 on VMware,

but, as I know, till now the only problem is connected with Intel HD Graphics VGA driver on Windows 8.1.

To find out solution for it , see here:

Hope helped you.

I have upgraded one VM from 8.0 to 8.1, I am running WS 9.02. You do it the same way as a physical machine, via the MSFT store.

I encountered 3 problems:

1. First try, the option to upgrade did not show up in the store.

I did a windows update, went back to the MS store and ran the upgrade.... wait, wait, yawn, wait some more. Smiley Happy

2. When starting the VM, I got the promiscuous mode error, I am running on a Linux host. Provided the proper permissions to get rid of that error each time the VM starts.

3. That error seemed to have to do with enabling shared folders. I cannot see the hosts shared folders even after fixing #2. They were there with 8.0.

Since I don't use shared folders (I use the Samba server in my Linux host), I have not pursued it.

I run Visual Studio (now 2013 Pro) in that VM and it is working OK. I don't do much else. I don't see any video problems, I have tested Unity: OK, full screen: OK. Dual screen ever so slightly flaky but OK. Smiley Happy

If you have installed VMware Tools in the Windows 8 VM uninstall them and then try the upgrade. May help But it would be better if MS can provde an full 8.1 ISO..

Hi Lou. Thank you for your interesting answer.

So you are running WS 9.02 with Windows 8.1 guest without problems? I'm surprised because I thought one need WS 10 to run Windows 8.1. I assume your configuration is not supported?

Hi mfelker. Thank you for your reply.

Are you suggesting to uninstall VMware Tools before the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 or before the upgrade from WS 9 to 10?

Thanks in advance.

VMWare has a page where you can look up what is supported. I had been running 8.0 in a VM and decided to test the upgrade. I also need it to write WP8 store apps. If it is unsupported, it means VMWare won't help you try to fix it.... you get more help here anyway. Smiley Happy

I won't bother with version 10 until they release a couple of more fixpacks. The suits always seem to demand release prior to completion.

Haha, of course the suits demand premature release because their biggest fear is that the technicians waste time and money adding unnecessary code. Better too early than too late, eh. Smiley Happy But let's be fair. I'm using VMware products for nearly 10 years now and I can not complain.

Anyway, I agree with you that it's a good idea to let version 10 "settle" for some time. I've downloaded 10.0.1 and will use it for some time before doing my guest upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1.

Hi, I have updated from WS 9 to 10.0.1. Update went ok. I just noticed that one processor core is running at 100% during the update. Even when it just displayed the dialog to enter the license key.

I have been using 10.0.1 for some time now with my old VMs and see no problems. Startup time for Workstation decreased greatly. The VMware Tools update did not start automatically in Windows 8. I had to run setup.exe by hand.

I've read somewhere that before updating the guest from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, I should set the operating system in the VM settings to Windows 8.1. However, I do not see this option. Even when I set up a new VM, I can not select Windows 8.1 as guest.

I thought Workstation 10 was build to support Windows 8.1. Then why can't I select Windows 8.1 as guest OS?

You can add me to the list of users running Win 8.1 (x64) guest (on win 7x64 SP1 host) in workstation 9.0.3. Seems to be running just fine. Using shared folders and running test builds inside of it. I didn't do an upgrade though, installed from scratch.

I also was surprised, but it's in the selection of OS's for the VM. I have a copy of Workstation 10 because I also thought I needed it and was ready to upgrade if needed, but 10 still seems to have a lot of problems still and if I can run using 9.0.3, I will until 10 becomes useable. 9.0.3 seems to be pretty solid for me so far even some of my unity problems when undocking / redocking a laptop using 3 monitors seem to be much less so far. USB performance still sucks compared to using v10, but I vote for reliability/stability over bells/whistles/performance.

Thank you for your reply, newbie93. What do you mean by "it's in the selection of OS's for the VM." When you use the New Virtual Machine wizard, you can select Windows 8.1 as guest operating system? I don't see this.

I really don't know if I should be happy or angry about you people telling me that I have just wasted some money upgrading to WS 10 for Windows 8.1 support. Smiley Wink

I don't see any user-visible changes to WS 10 that are specific to Windows 8.1. Maybe they have changed something under the hood, but I can't find any information about it.

I'll start the upgrade of my guest to Windows 8.1 now. Wish me luck...

HM:

If you look at the release notes for 9.0.3 here:

VMware Workstation 9.0.3 Release Notes

6 bullet items up from the bottom of the page, you will see that "Easy Install" now supports Windows 8.1

Just for the files: I had a shared folder mapped as a network drive in my guest. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the network drive did not work. VMware support suggested to re-install VMware tools. I did it and the network drive is now working again.

Sorry to tag in here but I just saw this thread and am having similar issues after updating to W8.1.  I'm running Fusion 6.0.2 on a MacBook Pro using Mavericks and now my supposedly shared folders from the Mac can no longer be seen from within Windows.  I've checked in Shared Folders settings and they all appear to be turned on.  I've tried toggling them off then back on again, restarting the VM, etc, etc.  I even tried reinstalling VMTools but still I have no access to my shared folders on the Mac from within Windows.

I've also tried searching the forums but haven't found anything newer than this note.

Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
