The file specified is not a virtual disk while powering on virtual machine

Hi,

You probably have seen similar posts but this one is different. Smiley Happy

I've been searching a lot on the web before posted this.

I have a workstation with 4 phisical disks. 2 SSD disks and 2 machanical disks.

My OS is Windows 7 Pro.

VMware Workstation is 12 Pro (12.5.5 build-5234757)

My problem is:

Im not able to power on virtual machines created on new Plextor SSD specially purchased for running VM's.

The error I see in the log file is the following:

2017-04-08T18:27:19.944+02:00| vmx| I125: DISK: OPEN scsi0:0 'G:\VMs\VMware ESXi 6 (2)\VMware ESXi 6 (2).vmdk' persistent R[]

2017-04-08T18:27:19.944+02:00| vmx| I125: DISK: Cannot open disk 'G:\VMs\VMware ESXi 6 (2)\VMware ESXi 6 (2).vmdk': The file specified is not a virtual disk (15).

This does not happen when I create VM on any other disk on this system.

All disks are NTFS formated

I also tried to recreate the disk header with no success.

I honestly have no clue where to look for possible problem areas.

Just a SWAG, but have you checked the Plextor site for a firmware update?

Hi,

Smells very much like hardware issues with the Plextor disk, mostly because of your mention that you have no issues when creating a VM on another disk.

IOW, either your plextor disk has issues itself or the sata/sas cable used to connect the Plextor SSD is unreliable (assuming it is a sata model and not a M.2 one)

As you mention no issue with other disks we can probably rule out that it is a power supply issue, although it might be that the plextor is more sensitive to it as the mechanical disks.
