System freeze with Microsoft webcam and Windows guest

Hello,

I bought a microsoft lifecam studio webcam. When I try it on my Ubuntu 10.04 host it works ok, out of the box.

When I try to connect the camera to a windows guest (any, XP or 7) the camera usb connection is detected by the guest and as soon as the camera is recognised my systeem freezes completely. There is no error message of course: it's frozen.

This problem doesn't occur with my built-in cam. Difference: built-in is USB-1, lifecam is hd: usb-2. So it might be USB2 related.

Is there any experience with this webcam and vmware?

System:

Clevo laptop with i7, 8GB, and NVidia Geforce GTX 285M

Host: Ubuntu 10.04

VMWare Workstation 7.1.4 build 385536

Guest: Any windows version. Tested with XP-32 and 7-64

This problem has been reported here too, with no definitive solutions yet:

Surprise!

In Workstation 8 the problem is solved.

Player 4 still crashes though.
