Surface Pro 3 running VM on Workstation Player cannot display full screen 2160 x 1440

I just installed Workstation Player and was given a Windows 8 VM.

I've looked at YouTube, Help, Reddit, you name it and there's no settings I've made that can allow the VM to display 2160 x 1440.

Everything is up to date, VM tools installed, Windows Updated, newest Workstation Player etc.

What's a proven way to make this work?

Sell the Surface Pro 3 and buy something else. It's what I had to do.

I've run into this same problem on a 4k display after upgrading to Workstation Pro 15 - the "stretch-guest" option is gone for Windows 7 VM's (which I use for work). The only workaround I've been able to find is to change the resolution of your screen to something lower BEFORE you start up Workstation Pro. I launch at 1920x1080 (half my native resolution) and my laptop correctly scales it before I use the VM. A clunky workaround but means I can run my Windows 7 VM without stupidly small 4k pixels on a 15" screen.
