Snapshot physical memory problem

Dears,

I have a problem with a snapshot that used to work perfectly. It won't open anymore. It seems because a physical memory problem.

I can't chnage that in the setting while the guest is suspended and it's greyed out as mentioned in the picture

Please support

What did you change?

You can power off the VM and after that you can adjust the RAM assignment of the VM.

Well something changed... otherwise you wouldn't get this message.

Either your hardware no longer has as much RAM as it used to have before, or you upgraded VMware Workstation, or ...

We don't have a lot of info to work with from you, but assuming that you are using VMware Workstation Professional and not Player and that you _must_ use this snapshot then one thing you can try is to clone the VM from this snapshot (VM menu -> Manage -> Clone)
That will create either a linked clone or a full clone of your VM and you can power it off then before adjusting any settings.

I am using VMware Workstation Professional 16. My laptop has 8 GB RAM and the snapshot is using 1.4GB!

I thought about it but I couldn't while The problem that i can't make clone for the snapshot in the suspended status. Please find more details in the picture attached.

You can try to rename the .vmsn / .vmem file that corresponds with the snapshot.

What you are asking for is not a very common issue and I"m not aware of a UI way to fix this.

The error itself makes little to no sense in regards to the amount of RAM you have in your laptop.

The screenshot don't really give much details, it would be better to attach the last vmware.log file (you need to compress/zip it before you can attach it)

Hi,

Hmm.. well you could rename the .vmem file (not the .vmsn) for that snapshot, it is probably named something like "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition-Snapshot2.vmem"

if you then try to power on the VM you will get another error, similar to this one:

where you can discard the powered on state.

That would be one way to get around this.

I'm however still puzzled as to why you can't even power on the VM and the error.

Is it possible that Hyper-V is enabled?
If so, can you try to disable it?

I renamed the vmem to "snapshot.vmem" and the vmsn remain as it was "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition-Snapshot2.vmsn" but nothing is changed and I get the same error message. Please find the log file updated

The screenshot is not conclusive.
You also have to run the commands from that screen to make sure.

FWIW, I have to focus on my work now, so won't be responding anymore today.
Besides that I'm running out of ideas that don't require lots of manual changes to the configuration files.

Get rid of the suspended state.
Delete the vmss-file and remove any references to it in the *.vmx.

How to get rid of suspended state and stay in the snapshot? When I power off it returns back to the VM and not the snapshot.

It's the .vmsn file, for the rest Ulli is spot on (as usual).

edit: As you're editing things by hand.. I actually recommend to take a complete copy of your VM folder before changing things manually.

When did you last use that snapshot?

I'm asking because you are running VMware Workstation 16.1.2, and the vmware.log file says "Checkpointed in VMware Workstation, 12.1.0, build-3272444, Windows Host"?
Errors like the one you experience, are often caused by online (VM powered on) snapshots, and a change of either hardware, operating system, or the VMware Workstation version.
