Saving USB settings to .vmx File ESXi 6.7

I am trying to add the 2 settings below to the vmx file:

usb.quirks.device0 = "0xvid:0xpid smart-card"

usb.autoconnect.device0 = "0x<vid>:0x<pid>"

I put the actual pid and vid and in the settings file. The two lines I add to the .vmx file are gone when I reboot the system. How do I get these changes to stay permanently?

I am using ESXi 6.7 and RedHat.

Lines that go into esx.conf will be lost after a reboot.
But lines in a vmx should not get lost.
Do you power off the VM and remove it from inventory before adding those lines ?
Otherwise the vmx-file in RAM will overwrite your edited version sooner or later ....

I did not power of the VM after editing the .vmx file. I will try that and see if that works.

You must power off before editing the vmx - obviously ...
