Rome Total War

A friend has Rome Total War on CD. He used to play it on XP and Windows 8 or 8.1. The game won't run on Win 10. I suggested a virtual machine using VMware. I help set it up for him,

VM details:

Guest OS is Windows 2000

1 GB of RAM

NTFS virtual drive

Mounted his real CD drive as the cd drive in the guest OS (Windows 2000)

screen size is set to 1024x768 in guest OS

He is using VMware player v14.1.1-7528167

I do have the fallowing line in the .Vmx file.

virtualHW.version = "10" - I changed it from 14 to 10 because I read that this was the way to 3d acceleration enabled in the guest OS.

Then game loads fine and is able to select which campaign to play. Before he can make his first move, the game crashes with BSOD. He has to close VMware using the Task Manager to exit.

Is this a known problem and is there a fix?
