I have created a new discussion for this post and located it in the VMware Workstation area of the community forum so people can help you.
This document should help you distinguish between vSphere and ESX/ESXi even though it is specific to vSphere 4:

are you sure you configured the VM correctly ?
please post the vmware.log
can you run any 64 bit VM ?
> You have configured this virtual machine to use a 64-bit guest operating system. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host does not support longmode. For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152.
Do you have VT support enabled in the hosts BIOS ?
i have laptop with windows XP. in this i have installed vmware workstation 7. in workstation i m installating esx as a new virtual machine. is it possible.
or first i have to install window with 64 bit oprerating system.
To run a 64bit guest - such as ESXi5 - you do not need a 64bit host OS. So XP 32 is fine.
All you need is a CPU that supports 64bit VMs
