Passthrough 8TB HDD to virtual machine

Hi all,

as already mentioned, I wan't to passthrough a 8 TB HDD to a virtual machine and give full acces to it.

But the following message is shown:

The operation on file "\\.\PhysicalDrive1" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media.

Select Retry to attempt the operation again.

Select Cancel to end this session.

Select Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

I hope somebody can help me. Thank you very much!

After writing my answer I thought unmounting the HDD from Windows to ensure exclusiv access to the virtual machine could be the mistake.

And after mounting it again, it works Smiley Happy

Thanks for your support!

Hi

could you post further informations like OS Host and Guest and virtual USB controller specification?

When if you attach it to host, before connecting to VM, are you able to access it?

Hi linotelera,

this is my setup:
Host: Windows Server 2016

Guest: Linux (debian)-based OS

all my virtual drives work properly

The 8TB HDD is connected via SATA and shown in Windows. To ensure exclusiv guest access I unmounted it in Windows (make it offline).

I haven't adjusted any USB controller specifications, because I don't know how it is associated with the internal SATA HDD.

Hope it helps, otherwise I will try to give more informations.

Thanks!
