One installed machine, running multiple times

I've had a hunt around and only found this http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/common/disk_sharing.html as a way of sharing an installed OS image among multiple VM sessions. I wanted to try to save space by not installing 5odd machines (each at 4-6GB).

This is something that VPC does, and as the docs state Workstation 3.x did it too. Can Workstation still do this?

The method used today with WS 5 & WS 6 is linked clones.

The VM's share the same base vmdk but each VM has it's own .vmx file and a .vmdk that work like a (.redo or snapshot) saving just the delta changes made by a user with a particular VM.
