No sound with Arch host, Debian guest

(Running VMware WS 16.1.2 on EndeavourOS w/kernel 5.14.6)

I'm having one of the dreaded Can't find /dev/dsp errors on a clean system install. The host software and guest VM installed without a hitch, it's just the sound in the VM that's not working at all. Well...I shouldn't say not working at all, because if I start the VMware console with root, the sound works. Here's the error I'm getting when trying to run VMware as myself (trying to reconnect to the sound card after the VM finishes booting):

Error toggling removable device: Failed to open the sound device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
The sound connection control operation failed.

I added myself to the audio group, then rebooted, just to make sure that VMware started with all the latest changes...still doesn't work. This seems like an obvious permissions issue, but I'll be darned if I know what it is.

After checking the Arch Wiki, there were some threads about installing alsa-oss and adding some OSS compatibility modules. This, however, did not help. For now, I'm going to run VMware as root.
