No printer - Ubuntu 7.10 guest

Workstation ACE Edition 6.0.3 build-80004

Windows XP Professional host and Ubuntu 7.10 guest with VMware tools installed. HP officejet d145 printer using USB port.

Removable devices, USB devices shows my HP printer (checked).

If I try to print something, the only printer listed is a "Generic Printer". And when I try to print, I hear a beep and receive

a pop-up screen saying "Error while printing".

Under Administration Printing, the printer configuration screen only allows Goto Server, and when I try to connect to server

the pop-up screen says "CUPS server error". The New Printer, New Class, Copy & Delete buttons are greyed out.

Under Preferences Default Printer, the pop-up screen says "CUPS server error" and "The CUPS scheduler is not running".

I have already tried, numerous times, restarting CUPS (sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart).

Prior to asking for assistance here, I have spent several hours trying to find an answer but with no success. I hope someone can help.
