No more TCP/IP communication in WinXP guest

All of a sudden, TCP/IP doesn't work right. I can ping the gateway address from inside the guest, but I can't ping anything else - and tracert hangs after the gateway.

I'm set up to use NAT.

I tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew.

I tried disabling and enabling all of the guest and host adapters, and have tried rebooting everything.

I'm running VMWare Workstation 5.5.4 build 44386. WinXP SP2 host, WinXP SP2 guest.

This happens plugged into corporate network, home broadband, and dialup broadband.

Any ideas on what else I can do to try to fix or troubleshoot this?

Is the Windows Firewall enabled on either the host or the guest? If so, you will need to configure it to allow the traffic.

Nope, not a firewall issue. Windows firewall is disabled in both host and VM, and I checked the Symantec firewall logs - nothing being blocked there.

Well, I don't know what the problem was, but I uninstalled and reinstalled VMware Workstation and the problem vanished.

Not only that, but I actually left the VM suspended over the uninstall/reinstall, and it picked up and started talking immediately.
