Networking problem

hi everybody.

I have VMWare Workstation 5.5 running on a server.

I have VMWare Player2.0.0 build-45731 running on my Machine

Both the server and my machine use adresses assigned my DHCP

Any Virtual Machine created on the server works fine and is automatically assigned the ip/dns server adresses via DHCP.

Now the problem is when i copy the virtual machine to my local machine and run it in vmware player it works fine but is unable to access the network. the ip con

Both use the bridged network option. any idea why is it happening and any solution for it ...

Thanks

networking wise, everything seems correct : bridging etc...

there's some things left to try:

what if you manually assign an ip in the correct range to your guest instead of leaving it in DHCP (should not make a difference, but who knows)

also can you confirm the network switch your host running vm player is connected to has no port security enabled ?

(port security = restricting the number of MAC addresses per port)

What is your host OS?

What is your guest OS

Is you Server and PC on the same local network?

If you are on a Windows host running VMware Player.

Confirm that you are Bridge to the correct physical network adapter by running " vmnetcfg.exe " located in the directory where you installed Player.

Uncheck "Automatically choose an available physical network adapter to bridge to vmnet0" This is located on the "Automatic Bridge" tab

Select the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab and select the physical network adapter that you want to bridge to vmnet0 in the dropdown menu for vmnet0

host os on server is Windows 2003 on my machine its XP

and the guest is XP

Server and pc is on same local network

I tried what u said but its still not working...

On all the machines, server , my machin, and then virtual machines on the server in Networks adapter status > Address typs says "Assigned by DHCP"

but the virtual machine on my machine says "Automatic private address".

Funny thing though in windows logon screen its showing all domains and i am able to log on to my domain ..

Pls help

please post the vmx content (config file of your guest)

the fact you can still logon to the domain is probably windows default cache (windows cache the latest users credentials to be able to log on even without network)

to confirm this, try to log on to the domain with a user you never used before on this Vm, it should timeout and report something like "domain inaccessible" or something

If troubleshooting a network issue, please include the additional information.

1) Post the output from " ipconfig /all "

from both the host and guest OS

2) Post the .vmx file from the virtual machine.

3) Details of how your host is connected to the local network / Internet (Cable Modem, DSL, Router, Switch, Wired, Wireless...etc)

When you copied the VM to your host with Player on it, how did you answer the prompt which appeared the first time you powered on the machine - keep or create? If you kept the old UUID, then the MAC address of the virtual NIC in the guest is the same as it was... and if the guest is still running on the Server running Workstation 5.5, then you have a MAC address conflict, and one of the VMs will not be able to connect to the network.

hey . when it gave that prompt i said create new uuid... so i dont think that should be a problem ..

i have a query. To run a virtual machine in another host we just have to copy the vm folder that contains all the files (vmx, vmdk etc). no other settings have to be done right???. Also i need to mention seperately that VMware workstation is running only on the server .... on my machine i dont have workstation just the player ...

yes, you need to copy the whole dir but as far as networking is concerned, differences can exists between the two hosts...

if you've used custom networking settings such as custom vmnet, once transferred to a new host your vm won't work as expected as the custom vmnet config is not present on your new host...

anyway this is a minor issue, it does not affect data integrity, just some fiddling with the config file to set back your vm to a known network

this is the reason we asked you to post your vmx content so we can troubleshoot the issue

two things:

the host running vmplayer has two nics, one is disconnected (no problem with that)

make sure windows is using the connected nic first

you can check this in control panel --> network connections --> advanced --> advanced settings

in the tab "adapters and bindings" make sure the operational network card is listed first

if not, re-order the nics, reboot windows

then search on your hard disk for the file "vmnetcfg.exe"

it's vmware player network configurator

take screenshots of all the tabs and post them here

You got it slightly wrong buddy ... The host is running VMWare workstation is the one with 2 NIC's (ie SERVER). Thats where i create the vm's and the vm's are working fine (getting connected to the network) on that machine.

The problem is when i run those vm's on MYMachine (which has just one NIC that is connected) that the VM's dont connect to the network.

hi thanks for replying to my every query. really appreciate it ..

Problem still persists.

Tried manual conifguration but it didnt work... It wouldnt work any ways coz the vm was not able to ping the gateway or dns servers.

you mentioned

"also can you confirm the network switch your host running vm player is connected to has no port security enabled ?

(port security = restricting the number of MAC addresses per port) "

I dont think that could be the problem as they are working fine on the server machine. but still in case is there any way to figure that out ?

port security : check with whoever manage network switches in your company...

note that entry level switches such as 3com officeconnect and so on do not have this feature, it's only present in the enterprise range like cisco catalyst etc...

other thing you can try:

\- updating the intel driver of your nic to the latest release

\- if you have another NIC at hand (not an intel to force windows to use another driver) , try adding it to your host, redefine the binding in vmnetcfg and modify your vm to bind to the new vmnet you've created

because config wise everything seems ok to me...
