I'm running VMware Workstation 5.5.5 build-56455, on a Win XP Pro Host system.
I just installed Windows Vista Business, as a Guest OS, but I cannot get the networking component to function.
How do I get this to work?
The "actual" NIC in my Dell workstation is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller, if that's relevant at all.

It seems that the virtual NIC is not installed in the guest, otherwise you would see an adapter in the guest "ipconfig" with an APIPA address.
Install the VMware Tools in the guest (you should always do so). It contains the correctdrivers for the virtual NIC.
