My guest OS no longer mounts physical disks, though it did only last week.

I'm running OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" in a VMWare Workstation 9 VM using a Windows 7 host. Everything works perfectly, except for this one issue: the guest OS won't mount the physical disks (partition, not the entire disk) I give it anymore. OS X's Disk Utility will see the partitions, but won't mount them.

If I try to verify the volume(s) in Terminal, I get the error "Unrecognised file system." I've tried formatting (from Windows) the partition to FAT32 and NTFS; neither seems to make a difference. It just won't mount. I've even tried creating a totally new VM and installing a fresh OS X, but no luck there either.

The odd thing is that this worked until only this week. I could mount the partition, I could format it from inside OS X, everything. And I could swear that nothing's changed since then.

I've Googled this issue a lot, but haven't really found any results. I've played with all the settings I can see, and haven't had any luck. I'd really appreciate any advice.
