Moving vmdk to another directory in the same HDD

I'm using Debian 12 and Workstation Pro 17.5. I want to move my Windows 10 VM's vmdk file to another directory on my hdd. How do I do this without breaking my VM?

This should work as follows:

  1. shutdown the VM
  2. close VMware Workstation (or at least the VM's tab)
  3. move the VM's .vmdk file(s) to the new location
  4. edit/change the VM's configuration file (.vmx) and replace the virtual disk's file name
    e.g. "diskname.vmdk" to "/new/location/diskname.vmdk"

Please be careful if the VM has active snapshots!

As always: Make sure that you have a backup!

I ended up following another solution but thanks for replying to my post.
