Mouse scrolling in VM guest doesn't work when mouse is moving. Works great when no mouse movement.

Guest - Ubuntu x64 (16.04)

when scrolling in windows in Ubuntu, the scrolling works great if I use the scroll wheel but don't move the mouse. If I am scrolling while the mouse is moving then no scrolling doesn't work in any application.

Any ideas?

If I set the Edit -> Preferences -> Input -> Optimize mouse for games to ALWAYS then I don't have this problem, but the mouse is also captured and I cannot move out of the VM without ungrabbing.

You might try setting the following config options in your VM to switch to the USB mouse (instead of the vmmouse driver which is default for Linux guests):

mouse.vusb.enable=TRUE

mouse.vusb.useBasicMouse=FALSE

This worked for me. VMware Workstation 16, Windows 11 Host, Manjaro Linux virtual machine.
