Mouse not working on Win 8.1 VM

Hey all, I am running Workstation 10 on a Windows 7 machine (with 32GB of RAM). I have several test VMs, including Windows 7 ones and Windows 8.1. The latter is proving to be unreliable, as I keep having a problem with the mouse not responding. The VM runs fine, and responds to pings, external web traffic, etc. Yet when I move my mouse into the window, it fails to respond, as if the mouse is not connecting.

Occasionally it works for a short time, letting me do a couple of mouse clicks if I am lucky, but then it stops, as if the mouse was unplugged or something. The only thing I can do is to restart the VM and hope that it works for a bit, which it sometimes does.

While this is happening, another VM running Win 7 is responding fine, mouse and all.

Any ideas? I am guessing that the VMTools mouse driver or something is borked, but I can't figure out how to get around that. I'd rather not zap the VM and reinstall it if possible, so any ideas for other fixes?
