Mouse Issues Windows XP VMWare 6.0 on Windows Vista

I have a question regarding a bizarre focus issue with Windows XP guest on a Windows Vista Host. The guest operating system does not keep the mouse focus and instead flickers between the Vista Mouse and the XP mouse. As a result, it is not possible to click anywhere when using the Windows XP guest operating system. When it does maintain a focus, there is large spatial discrepancy between where the mouse cursor is displayed and where it actually acts when clicked. There is also one other bizarre problem that when VMWare tools is not installed, it does not keep the pointer within the guest operating system. It is possible to drag the pointer out of the display, similar to when VMWare tools is installed.

The error occurs when VMWare tools is installed and can be improved by uninstalling the tools. Has anyone encountered this error and found a solution for it? I had a similar problem on another laptop (also using Windows Vista with an XP guest) but it resolved itself and I unsure of what I did to fix the problem. Uninstalling VMWare doesn't help, reinstalling the host operating system doesn't help and restoring the system to a previous state did not work.

Any ideas?
