Missing menu items on Mint 18 Host (Cinnamon) for Workstation 12 Pro 12.1.1 build-3770994

I upgraded to Mint 18 ~ 3 weeks ago and immediately noticed that only the "File" menu item is visible  (see red area highlighted).

The "missing" menu items are present, just not visible, so if you mouse select where you think a menu option should be the sub-menu opens as per illustration.

It is obviously down to my upgrade to Mint 18, but was wondering if anyone else has encountered this and if so how they managed to resolve it?

edit /etc/vmware/bootstrap to add:

export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes"
