Is it possible to merge a snapshot with the install base so as not to lose changes in the snapshot and wind up with only the updated install base file?(no more snapshots)
Sure you can merge the snapshot into the base .vmdk to commit the changes.
What exact version of VMware Workstation are you using?
If using WS 5.x you can do this using snapshot manager

Select "VM" -> "Settings" click on the virtual hard drive. What is reported for the max size, current size ..etc
