Just curous about two things

1)  What is your hardware - basically host video adapter?

2)  Can I asssume eyou running Gnome3 in fallbaack mode?  If you have instatlled the full version of Gnome3 - how did you do it?

I'm not sure what you mena when you say "thanks".  The only reason  asking about the specs of your physical video was to find out whether you  ran the full  Gnome 3 or the falbaclk mode  If you don;' know the difference try to remember whether there  was a frowny emoticon when you first brougth up the system and it said basically that it could not run Gnome but does go to fallback.  If you don't know the difference (can't see how you wouldn't since they are signifaicatly diferent try looking at the following  link to bring back the great memories.

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gnome-3-fallback.html

If you don't like that link used gthe seatch terms (Gnome3 vs Gnome fallback).  AFAIK nobody has beedn able to use the full Gnome because 3-D graphics is not yet enbabled by tools

Inquiring mind want to know

Thank you!!

Looks like you are saying that WS is able to run the entire full lverison of Gnome3 on y9our hardware. I'll trly againi but but hardware is probably not up to.

Output from lspic:

   On-board

VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4250] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M5A88-V EVO
Instaloing VMwar Tools doesn't  seem to work for.  No 3D accelaration anyway.

Greetings all,

I'm having the same issue. Except I'm running Gentoo with vmware workstation 8, and gnome3. My gnome-shell freezes whenever I switch workspaces.

CPU: i7

RAM: 8GB

256 GB SSD

NVidia GEForce 310 - using NVidia module

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

PMJI:

Have not had that same issue, I am running on Ubuntu 11.04. I have had some strange happenings go away after I turn compiz off, might be worth a try if you haven't done so already.

Hi,

Same kinda problems here. Running fedora 16 with ws8 64bit on dell m4600 with nvidia. When using gnome3 (with nvidia drivers) now and then my gnome3 freezes. pkill gnome-session sometimes helps and bring thinks back and sometimes things are foobar.

Running gnome 3 without WS running doesnt give any problems.

Running WS8 in fallback mode doesnt give any problems, but then ofcourse i have to stay in fallback mode.

Running ws7 on fedora 15 with gnome3 + nvidia drivers didn't gave any probs.

Another problem I have with WS8 is that it sometimes disables my keyboard repeat in fedora (both in gnome3 and gnome3 fallback). Keyb repeat keeps working in the virtual machine (win xp / win 7). It's fixed when i re-enable keyb repeat with xset r on fedora, but it's a matter of time before it gets de-activated again while switching from a vm to fedora and back (haven't really found when it is triggered exactly).

cheers

Christof

I'm having trouble with VMware player in GNOME 3 also.  I have not tried Workstation 8 yet,  But it seems that as soon as I open up a VM in player, my keyboard repeat stops working, and the desktop will freeze up from time to time.  I've found I can get it to un-freeze most of the time by going to another virtual console, logging in, and sending a HUP signal to gnome-shell.

Same issue here:

Lenovo T520 (Nov 2011).  I have left the BIOS to default which uses Optimus when the OS can detect it.  Which it defaults to the Intel GPU.

In Gnome shell it "freezes" where I can still move the mouse, but I can't click on anything.  I have not attempted to resolve the issue by connecting remotely or anything.  I simply throw down the CTRL-ALT-Backspace and then reboot... praying my VM isn't going to end up being corrupt.

My plan is to try Gnome with Compiz and see if I can avoid the issue.  I feel the issue resides somewhere in the Gnome shell, but I have nothing technical to support that claim   I am hoping that someone that has dealt with this can confirm that using Gnome with Compiz resolves the issue.

Also: I had to use someone's patch to update the installation so it would compile at first-run

Hello,

I'm having the same issue. In my case it manifests when I attempt to shut down or suspend my Windows 7 VM from Full Screen mode. I can move my cursor, but the gui doesn't respond. I can drop to tty1 with ctrl-alt-F1, and pkill vmware or gnome-shell, but none of that makes the gui responsive again.

My system setup is as follows (from lspci, /proc/cpuinfo, etc):

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Product Name: HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook PC
model name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 460  @ 2.53GHz
MemTotal:        3851824 kB

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series] (rev ff)

(My system has hybrid video with vgaswitcheroo. I've seen this bug numerous times on the Intel Graphics controller, but I haven't tested it on the ATI)

Same problem on Ubuntu 11.10 64bit with gnome3. I can drop to a terminal but cannot get X to recover. I've so far remved the VMs 3D support, used the VM monitor configuration and finally rolled back to workstation 7 with the problem still there!

Not sure if this is an "update".. but I don't seem to have any issues if I use Gnome 3 Fallback Mode with Compiz.  I have not tried using KDE - simply because I would rather go back to using Windows 7 than use KDE.

Also - when I try to recall the situations that make it lock up, I believe it was when I had my Windows VM in a non-fullscreen mode and I tried to use a desktop enhancement.  Such as moving the mouse to the upper left corner to bring up the menu.  (similar to the OP where that person accessed the Gnome "feature" in the lower right-hand corner.)

I to am having the same problem.  I can be working in my Windows 7 VM for some time but suddenly my entire gnome-shell session will freeze and will not come back to life.  In order to resolve I simply do ALT+CTL+PRINT SCREEN+K to restart the session.  This is really becoming a pain in the butt and would love some kind of resolution.

If someone finds a resolution please share!!

I got exactly the same issue with core i3 2310M. About 15 minitues since the guest OS finished starting up, if I click on the VM Windows or go to the guest, the host will be freezed. I think this does not related to your laptop hardwares, this should be the bug of VMWare with Gnome 3.

Currently, in linux gnome session, I create 2 workspaces, 1 for working, and 1 for the VMWare windows. After starting the VMWare, I move VMWare windows to the 2nd workspace(to make sure I will never click on this accidently), then come back to main workspace and never touch to the VMware windows again.

From main workspace, I use remote desktop to work with the guest OS(vnc for linux guest, and rdesktop for Windows guest). This not a very good solution, but at least I can work without having to restart the whole system.

Sorry for unclearly explaination because my English is not good.
