License key invalid after upgrade from Workst 15 to 16

hello, I've just purchased upgrade from VMWare Workstation 15 to 16.
After upgrading the binaries to v16 it asks me to enter license but when I'm trying the license assigned to v15 it says "the license key that you have entered is invalid". My purchase of upgrade to v16 does not appear as well in the history.
What is the correct license number after such upgrade from v15 to v16 ?

  • From where did you purchase the upgrade?
  • Did you use the same Email address, i.e. the one used for v15?
  • Did you check whether the v15 license shows up in your customer portal account when you select the Upgrade License option?

Honestly I don't remember exactly from where I purchased it, but for sure I first logged into my VMware account. Then I went to Products & Accounts / Online Store where I chose US site. The purchase page picked up my profile data automatically so I didnt have to choose my email during the purchase. The v15 license is shown when I choose the following: Products & Accounts / Accounts / Manage Licenses. I'm not sure how to access this Upgrade License option, though.....

Please see https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/81665 for how to upgrade license keys.

I can see my VMWare workstation v15 only when All Products are shown. Choosing "Upgradeable products" returns no options. In the same time I was able to purchase an upgrade from v15 to v16. What can I do in such a case when I already purchased the upgrade to v16 ?

Contact the sales department... when you bought the upgrade, your key shown should have changed from a V15 one to a V16 one.
