So here is my question i downloaded a file which says "Kali linux vmware i486.7z";
Thinking that it is an bootable .iso file.
After seeing the 7z file i extracted it using 7zip which gave a huge 9GB file!! (which was only 2.8gb in 7z);
The extracted file contained lots of .vmdk,.vmdn etc files.
Now How do i install (or boot) this thing.
I have a 32bit NON PAE processor currently running Windows Xp sp3 32bit(NON PAE)
Please explain it from scratch i am new to virtual machines;
Thanks:smileyconfused:
Once the archive is extracted just doubleclick the vmx-file
1) You must have VMware workstation or vCenter.
2) If you don't meet the requirements above, you better can download the standard Kali ISO image which you can put on USB/HDD/Workstation whatever you want.
https://www.kali.org/downloads/
I assume that if you downloaded the VMware version, you should have a VMware product to deploy it in.
Probably it also contains a OVF, extract the 7z file, in VMware go to File -> Deploy OVF Template, browse to the OVF file and follow the wizard. Once complete you should have "pre-configured" VM, just a matter of starting it up and have fun.
:smileyblush:Should i Do it after installing some kind of software or what?
It says windows did not recognize the file .vmx
Thanks for the quick reply
In that 9GB extracted folder there was no file with the extension .ovf,
What exactly is the Vmware software and what is it going to do?
You mean, I have to install a software named "Vmware Workstation"?
Thanks for the quick reply:smileylaugh:.
You have installed a kali linux Vmware image but not the ISO image
As you say it contains a many vmdk, vmx ,vmsd
So this image type will only made for install in Vmware software Not for Host machine
So to install in Vmware software you just need to open Extract kali-linux___.7z file
OPen Vmware software-> (click on ) OPEN a Virtual Machine->Browse to that folder where it was Extracted ->(open )Kali-Linux-2020.1-vmware-amd64.vmx (vmx file)
it will import it into Vmware software ..
It would help if you show the content of the 7z-file.
Then we could probably tell you how to use it.
By the way.... on the download page for that archive you should find instructions too.
