Installing Windows XP in a VM

I want to install Windows XP in a VM but I do not want to pre-allocate the file space. I need to create a ACE master using this. If I tell the system that I want 50 Gig maximum and then try to load windows, when I go to format the drive it tries to format 50 gig at one time. How do I get around this? I can't have 50 gig ACE machines when I'm uploading them to my FTP site. I would like to have a base install of Windows XP and our program development environment and then have the drive grow to a maximum of 50 gig as needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

You didn't choose "Allocate disk space now" while creating the vmdk file, did you?

Even if the installer sees 50GB and formats 50GB it won't take 50GB disc space on your HD if you deselected the already mentioned "Allocate disk space now"-option.
